Jama Masjid, Champaner

Jama Masjid in Champaner is a rectangular mosque with eleven domes, two octagonal minarets, and 172 pillars distributed throughout multiple prayer halls. Intricate stone carvings decorate the surfaces throughout the building.

Sultan Mahmud Begada commissioned this mosque in 1513 as an important religious structure during the Gujarat Sultanate period. It represented a major architectural undertaking of its era.

The building blends Islamic design with Hindu decorative motifs, showing lotus flowers, vines, and geometric patterns carved into the stone surfaces. This fusion reflects how different religious traditions coexisted and influenced each other in the region.

The site is easy to navigate with multiple gateways providing different access routes to the main courtyard. Visitors can take time to explore the various sections and view the ritual washing facilities.

Stone plaques with verses from the Quran cover the walls, while one minaret displays bullet marks from a past conflict. These marks tell the story of events this structure has witnessed over time.
