Matiali community development block, Administrative block in Malbazar subdivision, India

Matiali is an administrative block in Malbazar subdivision covering roughly 204 square kilometers in sub-Himalayan foothills terrain. The block is bordered by the Mal River to the west and the Murti River to the east, with settlements spread across 27 villages and a few small towns.

Matiali was established as an administrative block to organize governance and revenue collection across the region. This division became important for managing local services and supporting development across multiple villages and settlements.

The local communities speak Sadri, Bengali, and Nepali in daily conversation across their settlements. This linguistic diversity shapes how neighbors communicate and how festivals and gatherings bring people together throughout the year.

The area includes three small towns - Matialihat, Chalsa Mahabari, and Mangalbari - with basic health services available at local centers. Keep in mind that settlements are spread out across the landscape, so moving between different areas takes time and local roads are the main connections.

Tea plantations have long shaped the landscape and economy here, with numerous gardens spread across the rolling terrain. These tea gardens remain the main employer for many residents and define the green character of the surroundings.
