Sriram Sagar Reservoir, lake in India
Sriram Sagar Reservoir is a large water storage structure built across the Godavari River in Telangana, covering an extensive area behind a tall dam. The dam features 42 floodgates that control water release during monsoons, stands about 43 meters high, and extends roughly 15 kilometers across the landscape.
Construction began in 1957 and the dam opened in 1977, transforming water management in the region for irrigation purposes. India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone in 1963, marking a major infrastructure milestone for Telangana.
The reservoir is deeply connected to the daily lives of farmers and villagers who depend on its water for irrigation and household needs. The water channels carrying water to surrounding fields show how this project has become woven into the rhythm of local work and agriculture.
The site is easily reached from Nizamabad and nearby towns via well-maintained roads accessible by bus or rental car. Entry is free, and the best time to visit is during the monsoon season when water levels are high and the gates operate actively.
A hydroelectric plant with four turbines generates electricity daily, powering homes and farms across the surrounding region. The plant quietly converts flowing water into energy while visitors can hear the gentle hum of turbines working to support local communities.
