Tangra, Chinese neighborhood in Kolkata, India
Tangra is a neighborhood in eastern Kolkata spanning five municipal wards, shaped by residential buildings with Chinese architectural features. Beyond homes, traditional tanneries and production facilities define the district economically.
The area was purchased in 1758 by the East India Company and incorporated into the Dihi Panchannagram administrative region. From this period came its development as a commercial district with specialized trades.
The neighborhood keeps its Chinese identity through temples, restaurants, and sauce production that shape everyday life. Visitors can see traditional Chinese shops and homes reflecting the heritage of the long-established community.
The area is accessible by minibuses and private buses, with Park Circus railway station nearby offering additional connections. A new metro station will significantly improve access in coming years.
Families of Hakka Chinese origin have run tanneries here for generations, a specialized craft tradition that shaped this area. This leather work is a rare trade that few visitors realize exists here.
