Science City, Science museum in Kolkata, India
Science City is a science museum in Kolkata spread across multiple halls and an outdoor area with models and exhibits covering physics, astronomy, and geography. The complex contains a planetarium, demonstration rooms for experiments, and a park with technical installations designed for visitors to try out.
The facility emerged in the late 1990s on a site previously used as municipal landfill. It was inaugurated by the National Council of Science Museums to promote science education in the region.
The site offers schoolchildren and families from across the city a chance to engage with technology and natural sciences in a hands-on manner. Many parents use the grounds on weekends to introduce their children to physics and biology through practical demonstrations, with most installations designed for direct interaction.
Access is through the main entrance at the northeastern edge of the complex, where ticket counters and information boards are located. Many areas are accessible at ground level, and it makes sense to allow enough time to visit multiple halls.
One of the halls displays a reconstructed dinosaur skeleton rising several meters high and particularly popular with younger visitors. Another section houses a simulator that conveys underwater exploration and is equipped with moving seats.
