Birla Industrial & Technological Museum
Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Technology museum in Ballygunge, India
The Birla Industrial & Technological Museum is a science museum in Kolkata housed in a heritage building with fifteen galleries dedicated to electricity, petroleum, nuclear physics, and metallurgy. The exhibitions feature interactive displays that explore fundamental concepts in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology.
The museum was established in 1959 when Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy visited the Deutsches Museum in Munich and secured backing from Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. This founding grew from a vision to promote scientific literacy across India.
The museum was founded by the prominent Birla family and reflects their commitment to making science accessible to the public. It serves as a space where visitors engage with scientific ideas through hands-on exploration and visual storytelling.
The museum is located at Gurusaday Road and offers multiple galleries with hands-on displays that visitors can explore at their own pace. Plan sufficient time to move through the different sections and engage with the interactive elements throughout.
A dedicated gallery called 'A World in Darkness' allows visitors with visual impairments to experience scientific concepts through touch and sound. This space demonstrates a thoughtful approach to making science accessible to everyone.
