Deshapriya Park, Public park in Kalighat, South Kolkata, India.
Deshapriya Park sits between Rashbehari Avenue and Sarat Bose Road in South Kolkata and features cricket fields, football grounds, and tennis courts for sports. The grounds also include jogging tracks and children's play areas.
The park originally occupied a larger area but shrank over time due to construction of a club building, public facilities, and restaurants on its grounds. These additions permanently altered its original shape and size.
The park serves as a gathering place during the annual Durga Puja festival, where multiple temporary structures display traditional Bengali customs and bring the community together. These seasonal celebrations shape how locals connect with the space throughout the year.
The park is open daily from early morning to evening with free entry for all visitors. Early hours are best for jogging and exercise, while daytime brings sports players and families to the grounds.
In 2015, the park became the first location in Kolkata to install a solar street lighting system that operates without batteries and feeds power directly into the grid. This pioneering project demonstrated new possibilities for public spaces.
