Tala Tank, Water tower in Tala, Kolkata, India
The Tala Tank measures 110 feet in height and 321 feet in width, with four separate chambers constructed of concrete, steel, and Burmese teak wood.
Construction of the Tala Tank began in November 1909 following designs by W.B. MacCabe, leading to its official inauguration in May 1911.
Philanthropist Babu Khelat Ghosh contributed land for the tank's construction, marking a significant step in developing Kolkata's municipal water infrastructure.
The water tower supplies both Kolkata and Salt Lake City with water for up to two days, storing 9.9 million imperial gallons in its chambers.
The structure withstood multiple natural disasters, including the 1934 Nepal-India earthquake and Cyclone Amphan in 2020, while maintaining its water supply function.
