Tala Tank

Tala Tank is a water supply structure in Tala, a residential area of Kolkata, consisting of four separate storage chambers. The structure was built using concrete, steel, and Burmese teak wood, rising to a notable height above the surrounding neighborhood.

Construction began in 1909 following designs by W.B. MacCabe and the structure was inaugurated in 1911, marking a turning point in the city's water supply history. The facility was built to serve the growing city with reliable water distribution to multiple areas.

The water tower stands as a visible landmark in the residential area, serving as a reminder of the city's infrastructure development and remaining integral to daily life for surrounding communities. Residents pass by it regularly as part of their everyday routines, recognizing its role in their water access.

The water tower is visible from surrounding streets and accessible via local roads in the residential area of Tala. Visitors can view and photograph the structure from public spaces around its perimeter.

The facility withstood multiple natural disasters including the 1934 earthquake and Cyclone Amphan in 2020 without losing its water supply function. This resilience demonstrates the robust construction and engineering skill invested in the original design.
