Basri Shah Mosque

Basri Shah Mosque is a heritage building in Chitpur-Cossipore featuring three domes and four minarets arranged in a rectangular form. The prayer hall sits on the first floor and connects directly to the street through an entrance staircase at 8 Sett Pukur Road.

This structure was built in 1804 by Jafir Ali and stands as the oldest mosque in Kolkata. It replaced an earlier building from pre-Mughal Bengal's architectural period.

The mosque takes its name from a revered saint from Basra in Iraq who made Kolkata his home during the later 1700s. His legacy shaped how the place became respected across both Hindu and Muslim communities in the city.

The building sits on Sett Pukur Road in the Cossipore district and is easily accessible from the street. Visitors can use the entrance staircase to reach the prayer hall and view the architecture inside.

The building still operates as both a place of worship and a Quranic school for local children today. The Imam teaches there, making it a living center of religious learning.
