Basri Shah Mosque, Heritage mosque in Chitpur-Cossipore, India
The Basri Shah Mosque features three domes and four minarets, with a rectangular structure visible from the bridge connecting Chitpur to Barrackpore Trunk Road.
Constructed in 1804 by Jafir Ali, this structure stands as the oldest mosque in Kolkata, replacing an earlier building from the pre-Mughal Bengal architectural period.
The mosque derives its name from a respected saint from Basra, Iraq, who settled in Kolkata between 1760 and 1790, gaining recognition from both Hindu and Muslim communities.
The prayer hall, situated on the first floor, connects directly to the street through a staircase at 8 Sett Pukur Road in the Cossipore district.
The structure functions both as a place of worship and a Madrasa, where the Imam provides religious education to local children.
