R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital is a medical college with an attached hospital in the Belgachia district of Kolkata. The complex includes lecture halls, student dormitories, research departments, outpatient clinics, and inpatient wards for different medical specialties.
The institution opened its doors in 1886 as the first private medical college on the Asian continent and went through several name changes. In 1948 it received its current designation and has since grown into a major training center for doctors in eastern India.
The institution takes its name from a surgeon who advanced medical education in the region. It serves patients from all over West Bengal today and combines traditional teaching methods with contemporary clinical practice.
Access for visitors is through several entrances, and patients and relatives should orient themselves at the registration areas. The grounds are large and it is advisable to inquire about the relevant department before a visit.
The municipal administration classified the buildings as Grade IIB heritage, making them a protected architectural witness of colonial construction. Some halls and facades still carry the original design features from the 19th century.
