George Washington-Hof, Municipal residential complex in Favoriten, Austria.
George Washington-Hof is a residential complex in Favoriten with five landscaped courtyards connected by buildings along Triester Straße and Unter-Meidlinger Straße. The complex contains more than 1000 apartments and offers community facilities including laundries, kindergartens, and a library for residents.
The complex was built between 1927 and 1930 under Mayor Karl Seitz and funded through municipal housing taxes. It represented Vienna's ambitious social housing program during that period.
The entrance displays a relief medallion of George Washington created by Heinrich K. Scholz in 1932, along with a terracotta figure by Josef Riedl. These artworks define the complex's character and connect visitors to the era when it was built.
The grounds are open and freely accessible, allowing visitors to explore the courtyards and observe the architecture from outside. It is best to walk at a leisurely pace through the different areas and view the facades and decorative elements at the entrances.
During construction, workers discovered numerous human skeletons from previous executions near the historical site Spinnerin am Kreuz. This finding reveals a dark chapter from the location's past that remained hidden beneath the modern urban landscape.
