Nordkettenbahn, Aerial tramway in Innsbruck, Austria
The Nordkettenbahn is an aerial tramway connecting Innsbruck city center to a mountain summit across three separate cable sections. The system climbs more than 2,000 meters vertically, with each station serving different terrain and access points.
Construction of this mountain railway began in the early 1920s, with the first section opening to passengers in 1927. The system has expanded since then and became a key transport link for both residents and visitors.
The middle station sits next to the Alpine Zoo, where you can watch local animals like ibex and eagles in their natural settings. This stop blends mountain transport with a chance to observe the wildlife people have lived alongside for centuries.
The lower station is centrally located on Rennweg, making it easy to reach and buy tickets for your journey. There are different stopping points available depending on whether you want to ride just to the middle station or continue to the summit.
The cable car shifts its role with the seasons, serving as a ski access point in winter and a hiking gateway in summer. This dual purpose makes it a portal to completely different mountain experiences throughout the year.
