Sokolica Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Sokolac Municipality, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sokolica Monastery is a stone structure perched on the slopes of Sokolica hill, featuring a church with a semicircular apse and a bell tower constructed between the world wars. The complex houses three significant religious manuscripts from different centuries that reflect the monastery's spiritual legacy.
The monastery was founded in the 14th century by Serbian nobleman Musa near a natural spring in the region. This establishment marked the beginning of Orthodox spiritual practice in this location that would continue for centuries.
The northern wall displays simple carved drawings of people and animals alongside ancient inscriptions from different centuries. These marks show how pilgrims and visitors have left traces of their presence over generations.
The monastery sits on a hilltop accessible via forest paths that involve a moderate climb. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow extra time to reach the site and explore the different parts of the complex.
A major restoration effort in 1995 brought back the monastery's original architectural features after decades of changes. The project worked to balance preservation of the old structure with practical needs for monastic life.
