Ljubuški Fortress

Ljubuški Fortress is a limestone structure that stands on a rocky ridge 396 meters above sea level. The facility features multiple watchtowers and thick defensive walls arranged across the hilltop terrain.

Construction of this fortress began in the 15th century under the command of nobleman Stjepan Vukčić Kosača. Control shifted between Bosnian rulers and Ottoman forces over time, reflecting the strategic importance of the location.

The fortress displays architectural features from medieval and Ottoman periods that remain visible in its structure. These layers in the design tell the story of different rulers who controlled the building over centuries.

Visitors should prepare for uneven ground and steep paths since the fortress sits on a hillside. The site is currently undergoing restoration work, but it is possible to explore the exterior areas and view the construction up close.

Records from 1477 indicate that the fortress housed a large garrison and served as a border defense point during Ottoman administration. Its exposed position on the hillside made it a visual landmark visible from considerable distances.
