Merdanya Monastery

Merdanya Monastery is a monastic complex in the Veliko Tarnovo region featuring traditional Bulgarian architectural style with stone walls and wooden details, situated in the western part of Merdanya village. The structure displays characteristic elements of Eastern Orthodox monastery design with modest but solid construction.

The monastery was originally built in the 13th century and underwent complete reconstruction in 1853, funded by Hadji Kesariy Khorozov from the town of Elena. This renewal ensured the complex's survival and shaped its current form.

The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Forty Martyrs and serves as a spiritual center for nuns in the region. Daily services and religious ceremonies shape the rhythm of life here, drawing visitors who wish to experience Eastern Orthodox traditions.

The monastery is located southeast of Veliko Tarnovo and remains open to visitors throughout the year, with regular religious services taking place. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and follow etiquette for religious sites.
