CFB Suffield, Military training base in southeastern Alberta, Canada
CFB Suffield is a Canadian Forces base covering a large expanse of semi-arid terrain in southeastern Alberta. It operates dedicated areas for military training, research facilities, and manages independent water, sewage, and fire services for its residents and nearby communities.
The base was established in 1941 when the Canadian government acquired the land and relocated about 450 residents to create a facility for testing chemical weapons for British forces during World War II. This legacy as a research and testing site has continued to shape the installation.
The base operates its own radio station, CKBF-FM, broadcasting music and news specifically for Canadian and British military personnel stationed here. This station is part of the daily rhythm for those posted to the installation.
The installation is located roughly 80 kilometers northwest of Medicine Hat and is not easily accessible since it is an active military facility. Visitors should research access requirements in advance as entry is restricted and strictly controlled.
The base houses Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Suffield, which focuses on specialized research in military engineering, autonomous systems, and protection against chemical and biological threats. This research work continues the site's original wartime role and has evolved into modern defense technologies.
