O'Keefe House, Victorian residence in downtown Toronto, Canada
Description
The O'Keefe House is a multi-story brick building on Bond Street in downtown Toronto with double and triple bedrooms arranged across multiple floors. Each level contains shared kitchenettes and bathrooms to serve the residents.
History
Eugene O'Keefe purchased the property in 1879 near his brewery operations and occupied it until his death in 1913. The building later became student housing operated by Toronto Metropolitan University from 1964 until it closed in 2018.
Culture
The residence served as a social hub where students gathered daily and built connections through shared living spaces and group activities. The communal kitchenettes on each floor encouraged informal meetings and friendships among those who lived there.
Practical
The building is located in downtown Toronto in an area well served by public transportation and easily accessible on foot. Keep in mind that the residence is no longer in operation and can only be viewed from the outside.
Did you know?
During its years as student housing, residents maintained a special tradition at house meetings where a gavel was passed among them. This practice served to recognize and honor individuals who made meaningful contributions to their living community.
