Water Sky Garden, Public art installation at Richmond Olympic Oval, Canada
Water Sky Garden is a public art installation at Richmond Olympic Oval featuring a central wetland treatment pond surrounded by a red cedar boardwalk. The site includes two pedestrian bridges, two large suspended net sculptures, and fountains that together create an interconnected sculptural environment.
The installation was completed in 2009 as part of the Richmond Olympic Oval development for the 2010 Winter Games. It was conceived as both an artistic addition and a working rainwater management system integrated into the Olympic venue.
The red cedar boardwalk follows patterns inspired by Dragon Dance movements, reflecting the community heritage of Richmond. This design choice makes the installation a place where local traditions shape how people experience the space.
The garden is freely accessible year-round with well-maintained pathways that wind through the pond system and surrounding landscape. Plan to visit in the evening hours to see the illuminated net sculptures at their best effect.
The two suspended net sculptures feature submerged lights that create shifting patterns against the night sky when darkness falls. This nocturnal illumination gives the installation a completely different presence than it has during daytime hours.
