Alpstein, Mountain range in canton St. Gallen, Switzerland

The Alpstein is a compact limestone massif composed of three parallel mountain chains reaching up to 2502 meters in elevation. Steep rock formations alternate with expansive pastures throughout the range, creating its distinctive landscape.

The massif took shape millions of years ago during the Alpine orogeny, when three primary rock folds thrust upward from southwest to northeast. These ancient tectonic forces created the mountain structure we see today.

Herders have shaped these mountains for centuries, moving their animals to high pastures in summer and producing dairy goods using methods passed down through families. The rhythm of mountain life still follows the seasons today.

Over 650 kilometers of marked trails cross the region, offering routes for different skill levels and distances. About 25 mountain inns provide meals and lodging, making both day hikes and longer stays easy to arrange.

The Fälensees lakes within the massif have no visible surface drainage, yet water mysteriously disappears underground through limestone passages. The water eventually reaches the Rhine River despite the lakes appearing isolated on the surface.
