The Arolla Glacier extends 4 kilometers through the Pennine Alps, consisting of the Mont Collon Glacier and the Upper Arolla Glacier sections.
During the Little Ice Age, the Lower Arolla Glacier stretched 2 kilometers farther into the valley, reaching near the current location of Arolla village.
The glacier path formed part of a mountain pass route connecting the Valais region of Switzerland to the Aosta Valley in Italy.
Visitors can access the glacier through a marked trail from Camp Arolla, following a 9.9-kilometer round trip with 498 meters of elevation gain.
The glacier splits into two sections, with the Mont Collon section featuring a dramatic 600-meter vertical drop at a 60 percent slope gradient.
