Kornhaus, Industrial grain tower in Zürich, Switzerland
The Kornhaus is a modern grain storage facility in Zürich distinguished by its striking white concrete form that stands apart from the surrounding urban landscape. The vertical tower was specifically designed to store and manage large reserves of grain with an efficient internal system.
The original grain mill was established in 1843 and became important for the region's grain supply. The current building was constructed between 2013 and 2016 as a modern replacement to meet growing storage needs.
The Kornhaus represents Switzerland's commitment to food security and industrial efficiency, processing 800 tons of grain each day for national distribution.
The building sits next to the Limmat River and is visible from multiple sides of the city center. The best views of its distinctive white structure can be found from nearby bridges and the adjacent waterfront path.
The foundation extends about 45 meters deep into the bedrock of the Limmat Valley to stabilize the structure. This remarkable depth shows the engineering challenge of supporting such a large weight on uncertain ground.
