Matterhorn Museum

The Matterhorn Museum displays exhibits in an underground space designed to look like a traditional mountain village. The installation includes roughly 14 reconstructed buildings such as a church and storage structures with original objects from the region.

The museum documents the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 by Edward Whymper, displaying original mountaineering equipment and artifacts from that expedition. This climb marked a major moment in the history of alpine mountaineering.

The exhibits show how Zermatt transformed from a farming settlement into an international mountain destination. You see old photographs and objects that tell this story of change.

The exhibits are located beneath a glass dome and wheelchair access is limited in some areas. Plan for roughly an hour and a half to explore all the sections at a comfortable pace.

The collection holds a rock from the summit of the Matterhorn that traveled into space aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour during a 1993 mission. This stone creates an unusual link between local mountain heritage and space exploration.
