Matterhorn Museum, Mountain heritage museum in Zermatt, Switzerland
The Matterhorn Museum presents exhibits in an underground space designed as a mountain village with 14 traditional buildings including a church and granaries.
The museum documents the first climb of the Matterhorn in 1865 by Edward Whymper, displaying equipment and artifacts from this significant mountaineering achievement.
Exhibits demonstrate the transformation of Zermatt from a farming settlement to an international mountain resort through photographs and original objects.
Located beneath a glass dome, the museum provides wheelchair limited access and requires approximately 90 minutes to explore all sections thoroughly.
The collection includes a stone from the Matterhorn summit that traveled aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour during the STS-61 mission in 1993.
