Gornergrat, Scenic viewpoint in Zermatt, Switzerland

Gornergrat is a rocky ridge in the Valais Alps standing at 3,135 meters and serving as a natural observation point above the surrounding landscape. From here, visitors see roughly 29 peaks and the Gorner Glacier spreading through the valley below.

The rack railway opened in 1898 as Switzerland's first electric cogwheel train in operation. It remains the highest open-air mountain railway in Europe today.

The two observatories housed in the Kulmhotel's towers support ongoing space research and remain active in studying the night sky. Visitors can observe the scientific facilities and learn about the work conducted here.

A cogwheel train takes roughly 35 minutes from Zermatt to reach the summit with regular daily service. A hotel, restaurants, and shops at the top serve visitors throughout the day.

On clear days, visitors see many of Switzerland's most famous peaks from this vantage point, including the distinctive Matterhorn with its dramatic north face. This view attracts photographers and mountain enthusiasts from around the world.

Alpine sites in Switzerland: mountains, lakes, and valleys

The Swiss Alps include peaks, valleys, lakes, and passes that have impressed travelers for a long time. This collection brings together places where nature shows its best side: the Matterhorn with its recognizable shape, the green waters of the Verzasca Valley, the Gornergrat view facing 29 peaks, and the St. Moritz lake that becomes a natural ice rink in winter. Alongside these natural sights, you will also see signs of local craftsmanship, like dams hanging on the rocky walls, funiculars and cogwheel trains that have climbed higher for more than a century, or cultural sites such as the Pierre Gianadda Foundation in Martigny. Each place tells in its own way how the Swiss tamed their mountains while respecting them. A journey between high altitude and a gentle way of life.
