Gornergrat, Scenic viewpoint in the Pennine Alps, Zermatt, Switzerland

Gornergrat is a rocky ridge of the Pennine Alps at 3,135 metres, overlooking the Gorner Glacier about three kilometres east of Zermatt. The Gornergrat railway station stands at 3,090 metres on the south-western tip of the ridge, with the Kulm Hotel just above at 3,120 metres. From the ridge, 29 peaks above 4,000 metres are visible, including the Dufourspitze, Liskamm, Matterhorn, Dom and Weisshorn.

Tourism on the ridge began in the 1870s, and the earlier Hotel Belvédère opened in 1896. The Gornergrat railway, Switzerland's first fully electrified rack railway, opened in 1898, and the Kulmhotel was built between 1897 and 1907. Winter service reached Riffelalp in 1928 and the summit in 1942.

The two observatories in the Kulmhotel towers were installed in the late 1960s. The north tower held the Gornergrat Infrared Telescope until 2005, the south tower the KOSMA radio telescope until 2010. Today the south observatory is used by school pupils, students and the public through the project "Stellarium Gornergrat", with observations made on site or controlled remotely over the internet.

The Gornergrat rack railway climbs from Zermatt at 1,620 m through Riffelalp and Riffelberg to the terminus at 3,089 m, a ride of 33 minutes. The Kulm Hotel, Switzerland's highest mountain hotel, stands at the south-western tip of the ridge, just below the 3,135 m summit.

The Kulmhotel's two towers have housed astronomical observatories since the late 1960s. The north tower held a 1.5-metre infrared telescope until 2005, the south tower a 3-metre radio telescope until 2010; the south observatory now runs the Stellarium Gornergrat programme for school classes and the public.
