Findel Glacier, Alpine glacier in Valais, Switzerland
The Findel Glacier extends over 7 kilometers through the Valais Alps, with its upper section at 3,800 meters and its lower part at 2,500 meters altitude.
Between 1957 and 1958, scientists documented a significant retreat of 450 meters at the glacier's front, marking a period of accelerated ice mass reduction.
The Findel Glacier serves as an outdoor laboratory for Swiss glaciologists who conduct research on ice mechanics and glacier movement patterns throughout the seasons.
The waters flowing from the Findel Glacier contribute to the Grande-Dixence dam system, which generates hydroelectric power for the surrounding communities.
The World Glacier Monitoring Service includes the Findel Glacier in its global observation network to track changes in ice mass and movement patterns.
