Lac de Barberine, ancien lac de barrage en Suisse
Lac de Barberine is a reservoir in the mountain village of Salvan, Switzerland, held back by a concrete dam. The water sits quietly in a valley surrounded by forests and rocky slopes, and its level changes with the seasons.
The dam was completed in 1925 to generate power for the Swiss railway system. A larger dam was built upstream in 1955, and in 1975 the Emosson Dam was finished, which submerged the original Barberine Dam beneath new water.
The lake is valued by locals for its quiet setting and mountain views. The dam represents a long chapter in how the region has used water to generate power for communities nearby.
The best time to visit is in spring or early summer when water levels are lower and the dam is clearly visible. Winter access can be difficult due to snow, so check conditions beforehand and bring warm clothing.
The original 1925 dam now sits beneath the lake water, but when levels are low, its top can appear above the surface like a remnant from another era. This glimpse of the submerged structure reveals a layer of the region's engineering past.
