Subashi Formation, Geological formation in Xinjiang, China.
The Subashi Formation is a geological sequence in Xinjiang made up of red sandstones and mudstones layered across the Flaming Mountains region. These deposits reveal clear color variations that reflect ancient cycles of sediment buildup spanning different climate periods.
The formation dates to the Late Cretaceous period from 84 to 66 million years ago when dinosaurs lived in this region. It records a time of shifting environmental conditions in western China that became preserved in the layered sediments.
Scientists study the Subashi Formation to understand the ancient environments and life forms that existed in western China during prehistoric times.
The formation is located near Lianmuqin in Shanshan County, roughly 15 kilometers east of Subashi village. The red layers are visible from the landscape and display the geological patterns that researchers study.
The formation contains Tarbosaurus remains and three distinct types of fossilized eggs from ancient reptiles. These finds provide rare insight into breeding behavior and predator diversity from that era.
