Gaochang

Gaochang is an archaeological site in the Turpan region displaying the remains of a walled city. The ruins spread across a large expanse and contain remnants of fortifications, religious buildings, residential areas, and structures from different periods.

The city was founded as a military outpost in the first century BC and grew into an important trading hub. Over the centuries, it was gradually abandoned as trade routes shifted and regional control changed.

The site reflects the convergence of different trade routes and peoples who settled here over time. Visitors can observe how various religious traditions coexisted within a single urban center.

The site lies in an arid climate and is best visited during cooler months when you can spend extended time outdoors. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are important, as there is little shade across the ruins.

Visitors can see a four-story structure known as Khan's Castle, which serves as an example of ancient building techniques from the region. This ruin demonstrates how builders created stable structures more than a thousand years ago without modern tools.
