Turpan karez system, Ancient water system in Turpan, China
The Karez system consists of vertical wells connected by underground channels that transport water from mountain slopes to agricultural areas.
Developed over 2000 years ago, this water management network included more than 1700 channels during its peak operating period in Xinjiang.
The engineering methods of the Karez system demonstrate the technical knowledge transfer between Persian and Chinese civilizations along the Silk Road.
The underground channels prevent water evaporation in the desert climate while maintaining a steady flow for agriculture and daily use.
Each vertical well connects to horizontal tunnels at specific depths, creating a gravity-powered water distribution network without mechanical assistance.
