Grand Bazaar, Islamic bazaar in Tianshan District, China
The Grand Bazaar is a covered marketplace in the Tianshan District of Urumqi, selling carpets, spices, silk, jewelry, and handcrafted goods from across the region. The complex spreads across several levels connected by internal walkways, so shoppers can move from one section to another without stepping outside.
The bazaar opened in 2003 and was built as a modern trading and cultural center inspired by the historic marketplaces that once lined the Silk Road through Urumqi. The city had served as a key stop along that network for centuries, connecting China with Central Asia and points farther west.
The bazaar features domes and geometric patterns typical of Islamic architecture, visible on its facades and above its main entrances as you walk through. At certain spots inside, groups from different local communities perform traditional music and dance that visitors can stop and watch.
Entry to the main shopping areas is free, though certain parts of the complex such as the observation tower require a separate ticket. The internal walkways are long, so comfortable shoes make it much easier to get around.
The complex includes an observation tower that houses exhibitions about Silk Road history on its upper floors, making it one of the few markets anywhere that combines shopping with a walk-through historical display. From the top, the view reaches across the whole of Urumqi.
