Gaochang ruins

The rectangular ruins span 2 million square meters with outer walls standing 11.5 meters high, featuring nine entrance gates and multiple temple complexes within.

The settlement, established in the first century BC as a Han Dynasty garrison, functioned as a vital trading post along the Silk Road until its destruction.

The archaeological remains contain evidence of Buddhist temples, prayer halls, and living quarters that showcase the religious practices of ancient inhabitants.

Visitors can access the site by traveling 40 kilometers east from Turpan, with guided tours available to explore the outer city, inner city, and palace sections.

The site contains over 500 excavated tombs that have yielded thousands of artifacts including silk fabrics, coins, clay statues, and preserved food items.
