Nanbei Hu, Scenic lake in Haiyan County, China
Nanbei Hu is a lake covering about 122 hectares in Haiyan County, east of Hangzhou, divided into two sections by a causeway. Green hills surround it, and visitors can climb the three-story Baiyun Pavilion to view the entire water and surrounding landscape.
The lake gained recognition during the Song Dynasty between 960 and 1279 and became known as a smaller version of the famous West Lake. This connection to the era's landscape painting and literary traditions shaped its reputation as an artistically significant place.
Zaiqing Villa near the lake served as a refuge for Korean independence leader Kim Koo during his exile from 1919 to 1945. This connection links the place to larger movements for freedom beyond China's borders.
The lake sits about 80 kilometers east of Hangzhou and offers walking paths and tended gardens to explore. The best time to visit is during milder seasons when the paths are pleasant to walk.
A stone castle with battlements stands on Tanxian Hill overlooking the lake, housing a small temple inside. An old cherry tree grows there and blooms seasonally, linking the fortified place with living nature.
