PandaX, Particle detector in Sichuan, China.
PandaX is a particle detector located in an underground laboratory in Sichuan that searches for signs of dark matter. The system uses liquid xenon and modern electronics to record tiny traces of particles while blocking incoming radiation from outside.
The project began in 2009 at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and went through several phases with increasingly powerful equipment. Each phase brought new findings and allowed researchers to refine their methods for detecting particles.
The project brings together researchers from around the world working toward better detection methods. This international cooperation shows how scientific questions cross borders and unite people toward a shared goal.
The laboratory sits about 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) below the earth's surface, which improves measurements by reducing outside interference. Keep in mind this is an active research facility and public access is very limited.
One remarkable aspect is that this detector sits inside a natural mountain mine that was repurposed by scientists for their experiments. This location provides natural protection from cosmic rays that would be nearly impossible to create artificially.
