Hailuogou Glacier, Glacier in Luding County, Sichuan, China.
Hailuogou Glacier is a vast expanse of ice in Conch Gully that descends dramatically from extremely high elevations to much lower altitudes. The terrain features steep slopes, open ice fields, and distinct zones that visitors traverse when exploring the site.
The glacier formed millions of years ago and has carved its way into the mountains, fundamentally reshaping the local terrain over time. It continues to be a dominant force in shaping the landscape of the Daxue Mountains in Sichuan.
The glacier takes its name from its spiral shell shape, which in Chinese means trumpet shell. This curved form remains visible from the viewing areas where most visitors spend their time.
The glacier is reached through Moxi Town, which requires several hours of travel from the nearest major city. The best time to visit is from autumn through spring, when conditions are most favorable for exploration.
A striking feature is a dramatic icefall section where massive blocks of ice plunge hundreds of meters downward. Natural hot springs also exist in the surrounding area, creating a stark contrast between frozen water and warm thermal activity.
