Miltenberg, Medieval urban municipality in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, Germany
Miltenberg is a district capital in Lower Franconia on the right bank of the Main between the Spessart and Odenwald forests. The old quarter shows narrow lanes with timber houses from different centuries that cluster close to the river and the wooded hillside.
The settlement received town rights in 1237 and grew around a toll station where traders had to store their goods. During the 15th and 16th centuries many of the timber houses that shape the streetscape today were built.
The name derives from the castle hill where the medieval fortress rises above the Main valley. Today locals gather at the market square surrounded by timber-frame buildings, while wine taverns in the old houses serve regional Franconian vintages.
The old quarter is small enough to explore on foot, with steep lanes leading up the hillside. A railway station connects the town to larger places in the region and makes arrival without a car straightforward.
The castle from the 12th century now houses a museum that displays contemporary art alongside regional exhibits. The climb to the castle grounds offers a wide view over the Main valley and the surrounding forests.
