Staaken, Residential district in Spandau, Germany
Staaken is a residential area on the western edge of Berlin spread across several neighborhoods including Dorf Staaken, Gartenstadt Staaken, and Neu-Jerusalem. The district sits at roughly 31 meters elevation and contains residential zones with different character and development patterns.
The area was first mentioned in 1273 and underwent major changes during World War II. After the war it became divided among different occupation zones, resulting in complex territorial arrangements.
The Albrechtshof rail station in Staaken witnessed numerous border crossing attempts during the Cold War period, marking the division between East and West Berlin.
Regional trains RE 4 and RB 21 connect the area to central Berlin via the railway station. Unlike most Berlin stations, there is no S-Bahn service at this location.
In the 1920s, the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin company built airships here and the factory buildings were later used as filming locations for the movie Metropolis. This industrial past remains visible in structures that survive today.
