Bruno-H.-Bürgel-Sternwarte, Public observatory in Staaken district, Berlin, Germany
Bruno-H.-Bürgel Observatory is a public observatory in Berlin's Staaken district, located on Hahneberg hill at approximately 83 meters above sea level. The facility includes an auditorium, library, exhibition gallery, and telescope observation workshop.
The facility opened in 1992 in a former customs building after the fall of the Berlin Wall made new uses possible for the location. Its reconstruction was funded through the German Class Lottery Foundation.
The observatory is named after Berlin astronomer and writer Bruno Hans Bürgel, who spent his life spreading knowledge of the stars to the general public. His legacy shapes the work here today, where people of all ages explore the heavens together.
Visitors can attend regular sky observations, workshops, and astronomy lectures that are easily accessible by public transportation. The Berlin Welcome Card offers discounts on admission.
The facility houses Berlin's largest telescope, a 61-centimeter Cassegrain instrument specially calibrated for visual observations installed in 2005. Amateur stargazers appreciate this instrument for its precision and clarity when viewing distant objects.
