The pentagonal stone castle rises directly from the Rhine River waters, with its pointed end facing upstream to protect against floods and ice.
King Ludwig of Bavaria constructed the central tower between 1326 and 1327 to collect tolls from merchant ships traveling along the Rhine River.
The castle museum displays the restored color scheme and furnishings from the baroque period, representing life during the 14th century.
Visitors reach the castle by ferry service from Kaub town, with operating hours from Tuesday through Sunday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
The garrison stationed at the castle could halt passing ships using chain booms and imprison crews who refused to pay tolls in the dungeon.
