St. Bonifatius, Neo-Gothic Catholic church in Lorchhausen, Germany.
St. Bonifatius is a neo-Gothic church in Lorchhausen built with eight round sandstone columns supporting vaulted ceilings. The building incorporates red sandstone elements throughout and currently serves as a branch church of the Heilig Kreuz Rheingau parish.
Construction began in 1877 under Pastor Wilhelm Aloys Ohlenschläger following the complete destruction of the previous church by fire in March 1872. This rebuilding created the opportunity for the new structure at its current location.
The interior features neo-Gothic decorations with reliefs on the high altar depicting the life of Saint Boniface. These carvings shape the visual experience and convey religious stories to those who enter.
The building is easily visible from outside and accessible for visits, functioning as a branch church with regular hours. The interior features an original organ built by Johannes Klais in 1897 that shapes the acoustic character of the space.
The church stands on former vineyard grounds, as limited space in Lorchhausen required selecting the Pforten site for the new construction. This unusual location choice reveals how local conditions shaped where the building would be placed.
