Burg Binsfeld

Burg Binsfeld is a brick castle with three stories on the field side and two stories on the courtyard side, marked by a round tower at its southeastern corner. The rectangular layout features double rows of arches that frame the inner courtyard and define its character.

The castle was built in 1533 by Werner von Binsfeld on the foundations of an earlier structure. The new building blended medieval and Renaissance styles, showing how the family created a modern residence on established historical ground.

The castle displays architectural details from the region with loggias reminiscent of Italian design, and features carved stones with the initials of the Binsfeld and Nesselrode families. These elements show how the residents connected to wider European influences of their time.

The castle is located in Norvenich and now serves as a senior residence with more than 100 places. The grounds are surrounded by accessible pathways that allow you to get an outer view, though access to the inner courtyard may be limited.

The six-arch loggias on both floors of the courtyard side are an unusually elaborate design for residential buildings in the region. This double arrangement of arcades ranks among the most distinctive features of secular architecture along the Rhine.
