Bundesleistungszentrum Kienbaum, Olympic training center in Grünheide, Germany
The Bundesleistungszentrum Kienbaum is a national sports training center in Grünheide (Mark), a town east of Berlin, with facilities covering track and field, canoeing, gymnastics, volleyball, and triathlon among other sports. The grounds bring together indoor halls, outdoor areas, on-site accommodation, and medical support all in one place.
The site was originally set up in 1949 as a recreation park and was converted into a training center for top athletes in 1952. Over the following decades it developed into one of the main places for training German athletes at the highest level.
The center has been a meeting point for German athletes across many sports for decades, and that mix is still visible in daily life on the site. Swimmers, canoeists, and track athletes share the same paths and common spaces, giving the place a working, focused energy that visitors can feel.
The facility is mainly reserved for professional athletes, so it is worth checking in advance whether access is possible for a visit. It sits in a wooded area east of Berlin and is easiest to reach by car.
The center has an underground low-pressure chamber that lets athletes simulate high-altitude conditions without traveling anywhere. This type of facility is rare in Germany and draws athletes from endurance sports who want to prepare for competitions at altitude.
