Burg Kerpen

Burg Kerpen is a castle situated on a dolomite hill spur and features a powerful bergfried tower that rises prominently above the surrounding landscape. The fortification displays a three-tiered structure with defensive walls and passages that encircle the central tower complex.

The castle was founded around 1150 under Sigibertus de Kerpene and passed through multiple owners over the centuries. It sustained significant damage from enemy forces during the conflicts of the 17th century.

The German painter Fritz von Wille resided at the castle from 1911 to 1941, creating artworks that captured the landscapes of the Eifel region.

The castle is private property located at Burg 15 in Kerpen, so visitors can only view it from outside. Explore the surrounding area to see the structure from different angles across the accessible landscape.

Deep within the castle lies a well that reaches down 35 meters, a testament to medieval water supply systems. The dungeon beneath the bergfried dates to the original construction period and remains a rare example of such medieval chambers.
