Marienfeld

Marienfeld is a vast open field that was reclaimed from a former lignite mine near Cologne and now functions as a public gathering space. An earthen hill rises from the center, creating an elevated vantage point across the gently sloping grounds.

The site was transformed after decades of lignite mining operations left large excavated areas that required restoration. The landform was reshaped in the early 2000s to prepare the space for large-scale public events.

The name Marienfeld traces back to a 15th-century Pietà sculpture that drew pilgrims to this region, reflecting its deep religious roots. This spiritual connection remains woven into how people experience the open space today.

The field is straightforward to walk through, with the hill offering a clear vantage point to survey the entire grounds. The space is open and exposed, so bring sun protection and consider wind conditions when planning your visit.

The central hill was constructed through an intensive building effort that required thousands of truck loads to move the necessary earth to the site. This earthwork was completed in a compressed timeframe to serve a singular massive gathering.
