Marienfeld, Former lignite mining site near Cologne, Germany

Marienfeld extends across a vast grassy field that was transformed from an open-pit mining area into a public gathering space near Cologne Cathedral.

The area gained recognition when it hosted the Catholic Church's World Youth Day celebration in 2005, drawing more than one million participants from across the globe.

The name Marienfeld connects to a 1420 Pietà sculpture that generated pilgrimages, reflecting the religious heritage of this North Rhine-Westphalia region.

A 10-meter hill constructed with 80,000 cubic meters of earth provides an elevated viewing platform for large gatherings and outdoor events.

The field contains the Pope Hill, which required 200 trucks per day during construction to create a central focal point for the 2005 World Youth Day Mass.

Location: Rhein-Erft District
