Schloss Gymnich

Schloss Gymnich is a water castle with an L-shaped structure featuring two wings and towers on the western side. The castle sits within extensive grounds planted with gardens and green areas that enhance its setting.

The fortress was founded in 1354 by Heinrich I von Gymnich and later fell under the jurisdiction of the Cologne Archbishop. This connection shaped its development across centuries.

The interior rooms display wall paneling and stucco decorations showing castles from the era of Prince-Bishop Clemens August. These decorative elements reveal the place's importance within the regional power structure.

The grounds are accessible from Balkhausener Straße near the local church entrance. The site is relatively flat and easy to explore on foot.

From 1971 to 1990, the castle served as a federal government guesthouse and hosted major diplomatic meetings. This period marked a significant chapter in its modern history beyond its medieval origins.
