Burg Windeck, Medieval castle in Heidesheim, Germany
Burg Windeck is a medieval castle in Heidesheim featuring a rectangular defensive tower and Gothic residential buildings surrounded by remnants of a former water-filled moat. The complex displays typical characteristics of a fortified residence with both functional defensive elements and representative rooms from the Middle Ages.
Knight Herdegen zu Winternheim founded the castle in 1209, and it remained a residence for the Lords of Winterau until the late 14th century. Following this period, ownership changed hands several times and the structure underwent various transformations before gaining protected status in recent times.
The castle now serves as a wedding venue and community gathering space, transforming from a military stronghold into a place where local residents celebrate important life events. The spaces inside are regularly used for celebrations and social occasions throughout the year.
The municipality of Heidesheim acquired the castle in 1993 and undertook extensive restoration work to secure its historical structure for the future. Visitors should note that the castle functions primarily as an event venue, so viewing times should be arranged in advance.
The name Windeck derives from the castle's exposed northern location at the village edge, which in medieval times was considered particularly prominent. This exposed positioning shaped both its function as a watchtower and the later development of the Heidesheim settlement.
