Cloef, Scenic viewpoint near Mettlach, Germany.
Cloef is a viewing platform near Mettlach in the Saarland region of Germany, set above a steep cliff overlooking the famous Saar loop, a river bend that nearly completes a full circle around a forested peninsula. Benches, information panels, and safety railings line the edge of the platform along the cliff.
The Saar loop formed over millions of years as water slowly eroded the hard quartzite rock of the region, carving out this unusual river shape. The Cloef itself was developed as a viewpoint in the 19th century, when a growing interest in natural scenery brought travelers to the area.
The view over the Saar loop has long drawn painters and photographers who come to capture the light on the water and the changing seasons. Autumn brings the largest crowds, when the surrounding forest turns shades of red and orange.
The platform is freely accessible at any time and no ticket is needed. At strong winds, take care since the spot is exposed and the railings, while present, are low.
The rock beneath the platform contains fossils of sea creatures from a time when the area was covered by a shallow sea. Visitors who look closely at some of the exposed stone surfaces around the viewpoint can spot traces of these ancient forms.
