Saarschleife, Natural meander in Mettlach, Germany.
Saarschleife is a natural meander where the Saar River winds through steep forested hills, forming a circular loop roughly 10 kilometers long. The riverbed traces a tight path through narrow valley walls that rise sharply on both sides.
The area around the meander developed through the founding of Saint Gangolf monastery in the early Middle Ages, built on the ridge overlooking the loop. The location later became known to travelers and dignitaries, with notable visits occurring during the 1800s.
Saint Gangolf Church and remnants of an ancient monastery sit atop the forested ridge within the river's curve near Mettlach. These buildings shape how visitors experience the landscape when walking the trails.
Multiple marked trails lead to observation points positioned 180 meters above the river, offering views across the landscape. Clear weather provides the best visibility, so plan your visit accordingly for optimal sightseeing.
The village of Dreisbach sits within the river loop and is accessible only by ferry, preserving its isolation within the landscape. This small settlement demonstrates how geology can completely cut off a community from the outside world.
