Drehbrücke, Steel swing bridge in Deutz, Germany
The Drehbrücke is a steel swing bridge spanning the Rhine River that rotates to allow ship passage. It connects Siegburger Street with Alfred-Schütte-Allee and Poller Wiesen, serving both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Built between 1907 and 1908 by Duisburg AG for Iron Industry and Bridge Construction in partnership with Haniel & Lueg, it reflects the era's industrial development. The bridge became a protected monument in 1980, marking its recognition as an important architectural work.
The name refers to its rotating function, allowing river traffic to pass without obstruction. Visitors can observe how the structure represents a practical solution that balanced industrial needs with navigation on the Rhine.
The structure is accessible to both vehicles and pedestrians, rotating when necessary to allow ship passage. Visitors should note that the rotation can temporarily block crossing access.
The original wooden control house, clad in steel plates, houses the bridge's electrical drive system and controls. This historic component underwent major modernization between 2014 and 2015 and still operates today.
