Dicke Eiche

Dicke Eiche is a monumental oak tree near Airlenbach that stands as a notable natural landmark. Today a five-meter stump marks the original location, covered by a protective roof structure and surrounded by hiking routes through the Odenwald.

The tree grew between the 10th and 12th centuries and underwent several major restorations throughout its lifetime to maintain its structure. A significant restoration took place in 1958, marking an important chapter in the monument's history.

The oak served as a gathering place for locals across centuries and held deep meaning in regional stories and traditions. Visitors come to experience this connection to the past and understand the tree's role in the community's identity.

The site sits at about 340 meters elevation and is easily accessible for hikers of all levels exploring the area. It serves as a starting point for tours through the Odenwald region and remains accessible year-round.

After the tree was felled in 2012, a section of the original trunk was transformed into an altar for a chapel in a hospital. This transformation demonstrates how the wood continues to hold spiritual meaning.
