Ettlingen Line, Military fortification system in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
The Ettlingen Line is a military fortification that stretches between the Black Forest and Rhine meadows, consisting of breastworks and redoubts across the landscape. The remains of this defensive system are scattered through the Hardtwald forest near Karlsruhe and are partly still visible in the woods near Rheinstetten.
This fortification was built in 1707 during the War of Spanish Succession and served as a replacement for the destroyed Bühl-Stollhofen Line. It also played a role in regional defense strategy during the War of Polish Succession.
Multiple information boards placed along the fortification route provide educational details about the military engineering and defensive strategies of the 18th century.
You can explore about 500 meters of the original fortification in the Hardtwald forest, where paths make it relatively easy to access. The woodland offers shade and natural trails that make it simple to visit the scattered remains.
The fortification system deliberately used water channels that could be flooded to strengthen protection against enemy attacks. This water-based defense strategy was a practical solution to increase the effectiveness of the fortification without additional structures.
