Haus Schwarzenstein, Medieval castle in Drevenack, Germany

Haus Schwarzenstein is a fortified manor in Drevenack featuring a well-preserved central tower surrounded by a water-filled moat. The structure maintains a square layout and incorporates original foundations and vaults beneath its walls.

Construction began around 1348 as a defensive fortification in the region. Major renovation work took place in the late 1800s while preserving the original tower from earlier centuries.

The name comes from 'Swertsteen', meaning Sword Stone, which reflects its role as a defensive structure in medieval times. This origin tells of the building's importance for protection in the region.

The property is privately owned and not open for regular public visits inside the building. You can view the exterior and moat from outside the perimeter to appreciate the structure's design and layout.

Today the estate serves the Rhine-Westphalian Drag Hunt Association, giving it a second life beyond its original defensive purpose. This unexpected modern use shows how historic buildings can adapt to serve contemporary communities.
